Course Length

The scope of User Experience Design affects all aspects of the user’s interaction with a product: how it is perceived, learned, and used. The scope of UX design is holistic-its process begins with the conception of a product and carries through to its completion (and beyond).

UX Designers provide crucial design deliverables to ensure their solutions to design problems actually get built. These deliverables might take the form of detailed storyboards that show every state of a user interface in sequence, wireframes, interactive prototypes, comprehensive design specifications; or a combination of these. Producing these UX design deliverables is a fundamental part of a successful product design process.

This 2-day instructor-led course will provide a detailed overview of the User Experience Design process; from research (discovery), to design, to development. Within this context students will explore the indispensable activities, deliverables, and recommended tools that go into crafting successful user experiences.

Audience

  • Product Managers interested in achieving customer-oriented business goals.
  • Developers and Technicians already equipped to generate the components of a user interface who want to deepen their understanding of the UX Design process.

Participants will learn about:

  • The Ecosystem of User Experience: From branding to buttons, all points of interaction with the end user that make or break an experience.
  • Problem Discovery: Framing the problem to be solved and business objectives to be met.
  • The User: Meeting and mapping users and their needs.
  • Information Architecture: Content discovery and classification, structuring content and navigation for intuitive discovery, design patterns, and creating wireframes.
  • User Interface Design: Interaction design and conventions, grid-based layouts, the page fold myth, and a glimpse at Gestalt Principles of Perception that help us form content to aid function.
  • Prototyping the Experience: When to prototype, choosing the right fidelity, and necessary tools.
  • Usability Testing: What should be tested when, who should participate, how to script for and conduct testing, and the technology behind modern-day usability.
  • Art and Meaning Behind Visual Design: Aligning with brand guidelines, visual unity from screen to screen, style guides, human interface guidelines, and typography basics.
  • Principles of Responsible Web Development: The separation of content, presentation, and behavior and how it saves load time, accommodates multiple users on diverse devices, and simplifies maintenance.
  • Languages and Libraries of Today’s Web Developer: From HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to grid systems, vendor-specific style extensions, and jQuery.
  • Building to Suit and Scale: How to account for and build for an array of user types, browsers, and devices. The ideas behind progressive enhancement, responsive web design, mobile web development, browser testing, accessibility, and search engine optimization.
