Action based web frameworks, such as Struts, have dominated dynamic web development in Java for a long time. These frameworks are closely tied to the request/reply architecture of http and therefore, force developers to deal with its shortcomings. Component based frameworks, such as Java Server Faces, mask much of the complexity and limitations of the underlying http model to create a simpler, more flexible development environment.

This 4-day instructor led course places a strong emphasis on understanding the JSF architecture, which is core to generating successful JSF designs. Students will learn everything they need to create a full featured JSF web application; from how to effectively work with the standard JSF components, to creating specialized components. This class will also cover some JSF 2.0 features, including Facelets.Audience:

Prerequisites:

  • Solid Java experience
  • Knowledge of HTML

Students will learn to:

  • Understand the benefits of Model-View- Controller web frameworks
  • Identify the differences between component based web frameworks and traditional action based web frameworks
  • Create and register Managed Beans
  • Create JSF pages using the html and core JSF tags
  • Create Navigation Rules
  • Understand the JSF lifecycle and each of its phases
  • Internationalize web content using resource bundles
  • Use JSF Expression Language to bind JSF components to bean properties and actions
  • Use standard and custom Validators to validate component data
  • Effectively apply all three types of Event Listeners: ActionEvents, ValueChangeEvents, PhaseEvents
  • Import and incorporate external JSF components
  • Create and incorporate custom JSF component
  • Understand how custom JSF components can incorporate client side web technologies such as JavaScript and AJAX
  • List the main differences between JSF 1.1 and JSF 1.2
  • Understand the benefits of Facelets over JSPs
  • Incorporate Facelets in to a JSF application
