The Product Owner role as defined by Scrum is important, but difficult to execute. The Product Owner is ideally the single voice that drives the development team. They must possess certain skills and characteristics in order to be effective and to optimize the business return on investment (ROI). If the Product Owner is ineffective then the Scrum team will be too.

Taught by the author, this two-day instructor led course we will level set on agile values and principles and the framework of Scrum. Then, using collaborative and experiential techniques, participants will delve into the skills and characteristics of a great Product Owner. The remainder of the class will focus on the tools, techniques, and best practices that will make a Product Owner effective.

Audience:

• Business and IT Product managers, Project Managers, Business Analysts that have some exposure to agile and Scrum.

Participants will learn to:

• Describe the skills and characteristics of an effective Product Owner
• Create agile-friendly product backlog items
• Adorn product backlog items with acceptance criteria
• Understand how a healthy level of ambiguity is important
• Utilize estimation techniques to properly size product backlog items
• Build an effective product backlog to drive one or more Teams
• Effectively participate in Sprint Planning meetings
• Organize and drive product backlog grooming sessions
• Create release plans based on their product backlog and Team’s velocity
• Utilize release plans and road maps to answer, “How long will this take? How much?” etc.
• Communicate progress and status
